As we all know that Apple will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and to make it grand it is going to launch Apple iphone 8. Several leaks on iphone 8 designs, display and technology came. So, let us go back to the past and look at the journey of apple smart phones. The first iphone which came into existence was iphone 1 or simply iphone launched on Jan 9 2007 which was released globally on 29th June 2007. It brought a revolution in smart phone industry, it was a touch screen smart phone supporting 3.5 inch of screen & even had a 2.0 mega pixel camera which was hard to believe. It came in 3 variants the 4GB variant, 8GB variant and 16GB variant.
There was not much data to put on iphone neither there was any app store, it handled only 128MB memory and had an internet access supporting 2G. During that time having an internet access on a smart phone was a big thing. Another interesting fact about iphone is that an iphone 2 was never launched. Apple created the first generation iphone and the one that came after that was all about that 3G internet connectivity. So the precious number 2 was being skipped. If we talk about number of iphones released, till now total numbers of 12 iphones have been released (including S & I Phone C editions). Steve Jobs unveiled the original iphone on June 29, 2007. Moving on the next iphones which the consumers saw was named iphone 3G which was being released in July 11, 2008. As far as internal specifications, the iphone 3G was not much different than the original iphone. But now, apple has their own App store released and iphone 3G was the first iphone supporting App store.
This iphone got its signature for its 3G connectivity, which meant an access to a high speed internet you could actually use without wanting to throw the iphone across the room. The next iphone which the consumers saw was iphone 3GS launched in June 19, 2009. Apple now introduced 32GB storage option with the iphone 3GS. Clearly by introducing the App stores things got changed quickly for photos, music, games and apps and 16GB was not enough. There was a huge upgrade in camera department as the camera got improved from previously 2.0MP setup to 3.0MP and also added a video recording feature too. Apple also introduced Voice control. The next generation of iphone which we saw was the 4th generation of iphone that is iphone 4, which was launched in June 24, 2010.
Now we were getting somewhere to the modern iphones. The iphone 4 was the first iphone to support a front facing camera. Apple already knew that selfie would take over the world. iphone 4 also was the first iphone to get a retina display, having a memory of 512MB it was equipped to handle more than its precede an iphone 3GS, which had only 256MB of memory. Technology began to look a little more familiar, but 32GB was still the maximum amount of storage the iphone could hold. The next iphone which came into existence was the iphone 4S launched in October 14, 2011. Talking about difference between iphone 4 and iphone 4S was that the camera whopped from 5MP to 8MP and Apple also introduced 64GB storage variant other than 32GB for iphone 4S. Now the camera could record videos upto 1080p, which was a huge upgrade. In Apple 4S Siri was being introduced, and an Apple saw a huge amount of sales on iphone 4S as it sold 4 million units in its first week. Moving on the next generation of iphone which was iphone 5 that was launched on September 21, 2012. Apple sold 5 million plus iphone 5 in its first week.
The features of camera was the same as that of iphone 4S but the memory was boosted all the way up to 1GB. Now 3G became an old technology as Apple introduced LTE connectivity on its iphone 5 handsets, which means access to internet anytime, anywhere with getting your results with the speed of light. Apple also introduced its lightning connecter with iphone 5 and for the first time the screen got bigger. Previous generations of iphones had 3.5 inch but this time iphone 5 had 4 inch of screen. Moving on to the next step an Apple added two new handset for its 5th generation of iphones the iphone 5S and the iphone 5C both launched on September 20, 2013. Between the iphone 5S and the iphone 5C, Apple had sold 9 million units in the first week of sales. The iphone 5C was meant to be slightly more affordable and had a plastic shell. It was available to consumers in 4 different colours. The iphone 5S, on the other hand, introduced Touch ID, dual flash, and slow motion video recording, it also included the M7 motion co-processor which opened a new realm of possibilities and extended battery life. After 5S and 5C, iphone 6 and 6 Plus was launched in September 19, 2014.
The iphones 6 had the same specs as that of the previous 5S the only difference was the significant increase of the screen size. The retina display now became better having an HD display and there came an iphone with 128GB of storage. The amount of memory was same and camera did not upgrade in megapixel. But it did not bothered because Apple had already sold 10 million units of iphone 6 & iphone 6 Plus. Then came an iphone 6S and iphone 6S Plus that was launched in September 19, 2015. Well, iphone 6S was upgraded, the Camera made a huge leap forward moving from 8MP to 12MP and the memory was doubled too from 1GB to 2GB. After iphone 6 had some bending issues, Apple gave its iphone 6S & 6S Plus series aluminium back to make sure that bending issues never happened. Apple also introduced 3D touch feature on its phone. The next iphone which came into existence after 6S plus was iphone SE. Iphone SE was basically made available in a more affordable rate for its users. It was a small package of iphone 6S but lacked 3D touch. Then came the 7th generations of iphones which was the Apple iphone 7 and 7 Plus that was released in September 7, 2016.
Apple iphone 7 and 7 Plus saw new colours that of Zed Black and the Rose Gold. Zed Black was the most eye catching of them all. The only con was that Zed Black acted as a fingerprint magnet. Talking about its specs the iphone 7 comprised a 4.7 inch of screen and 7 Plus had 5.5 inch of screen. The design was different as the lines had given way to its solid colour. Also an iphone 7 Plus saw a dual camera setup which made it look different in the rear. Both the phones no longer had a headphone jack and connected through the lightning port. Also the home button was changed. It is not a button now it is a touch ID which sense the pressure applied to it and offered a hap tic feedback and you will feel the buzz from time to time. Both phones are now powered by a quad-core A10 Fusion processor with two high-efficiency and two high-power cores each also battery life has improved than previous versions of iphones slightly to almost 2 to 2 and ½ hours more. Apple tends to make a larger leaps between the original model and the S editions than it does from S edition to a new model but this time it seems that apple is skipping its S series and directly working on its next edition of iphones. Rumours were made across on iphone 8 that it will support an inbuilt touch ID, which will comprise a bigger screen, it will be sleeker than its preceders but there is no confirmation from the Apple on its iphone 8, neither Apple has justified that whether it is skipping its S editions on iphone 7. Let us wait for it to come and let us hope it will be a great evolution for iphones as it is a 10th anniversary of Apple iphones.
